DVS Welcomes New Board Members for the 2026-2027 Term
Every year, six board of directors roles are opened for application. After a thorough interview process and member vote on the final slate of candidates, we’re excited to share that the 2026-2027 slate has been officially approved.
We’re thrilled to have 6 board members as part of the approved slate and 3 for midterm appointments.
Our new directors will play a critical role in strengthening organizational oversight, shaping long-term strategy, and supporting sustainable growth of DVS. Collectively, they bring experience across academia, finance, operations, nonprofit, design, advertising, and policy research.

This is one of our most popular programs at DVS, offering mentees early in their visualization career an opportunity to work with a mentor who has 5+ years of professional experience in the field. Many mentors and mentees have shared how beneficial this program has been for their growth, some continued to stay in touch even after their cohort ended!
Mentee applications are open now through January 30. To be eligible as a mentee, you must be a DVS Plus member.
Mentor applications are open year-round. Anyone can apply to be one. Mentors support data visualization learning and help their mentee navigate their career options.

Aki is a consultant specialising in modern data technologies and visual design. She helps organisations create innovative visuals and data products by combining her expertise in data science, and human-centered design. Previously a Data Scientist at Google, she holds a PhD in Physics and has formal training in graphic design.

About the luminary
Valentina D'Efilippo is an independent designer and creative director and her favourite creative material is data. Her work has won many recognitions and has been exhibited internationally.
Her critically acclaimed book The Infographic History of the World has been translated into eleven languages, and she co-authored Britannica’s Encyclopedia Infographica, an illustrated encyclopedia for children.
Valentina's unique blend of creativity, storytelling, and data-driven insights has led her to collaborate with public organizations, start-ups, agencies, and global brands across a wide range of fields and formats. Her work spans theater productions, exhibitions, editorial content, and interactive platforms, establishing her as a leading voice in the field of data visualization and information design.
She also teaches internationally and runs workshops for universities and corporate teams, including a popular Guardian Masterclass.

Future Fridays, May 2025: Communicating layers of abstraction
Registrations for Future Fridays are open through April 28, 2025. In partnership with infogr8, you will learn how to create data viz solutions that address societal challenges.
Silvia Romanelli, May's luminary, will dive into the world of abstract concepts and how to visualize several layers of calculations in the environment and climate issues topic. Participants will research and learn the best ways to keep the visualizations engaging without oversimplifying, while leveraging readers’ potential mental models.

Meet Cedric Lary, Early Career Director at DVS!
We are excited to share that Cedric Lary has joined DVS as our Early Career Director.
Cedric is a data analyst working in the education nonprofit space. He first developed an interest in data visualization while conducting research in his undergraduate studies and deepened his skills through self-directed learning. After participating in the Data Visualization Society’s mentorship program, he took on a leadership role in the Early Career Resources Subcommittee to help make resources more accessible.
“As Early Career Director, I’m excited to help DVS grow into an even richer repository of well-organized, member-contributed resources and the thriving networking space I wished for as an early career practitioner,” said Lary. “I can’t wait to pay forward the kindness, support, and opportunities I’ve received from this incredible community.”

2025 Du Bois Visualization Challenge
Advance your data viz skills by practicing a new tool or experimenting with a familiar one through the 2025 Du Bois Visualization Challenge! Starting today, the challenge leaders will post a visualization every Monday for 10 weeks on social media and DVS Slack for participants to recreate.
The goal of the challenge is to celebrate the data viz legacy of W.E.B Du Bois—a Black American civil rights activist, sociologist and writer—by recreating the visualizations from the 1900 Paris Exposition using modern tools.

Registrations for Future Fridays are open through January 28, 2025. In partnership with infogr8, you will learn how to create data viz solutions that address societal challenges.
Rudi O’Reilly Meehan, February's luminary, will dive into the AI world and explore what jobs are at risk of automation, educate the public about AI's benefits and risks, and examine our relationship with AI. We will then create powerful visuals and stories that bring that information to life. And there’s a twist – you won’t make these pieces alone. We will be working alongside the machines – using AI tools throughout this session to help you analyse, prototype and tell stories with data.

2024 State of the Data Viz Industry Report Released
We’ve just published our 2024 State of the Data Viz Industry Report, which summarizes 861 responses about the state of data viz, the people who make it, the challenges they face, and where the field is headed.
This report will provide relevant insights whether you plan to transition into a data viz career or want to stay on top with the latest tech used to create data viz.
The report is available for public access until February 16. After this period, the executive summary will be publicly available while the report will be available to DVS Members.

DVS 2024 Annual General Meeting
We are starting off the new year with our Annual General Meeting (AGM)! We invite you to join us live on Jan 21, 2-3 PM EST. Our Board Members will share a summary of our 2024 activities, financial updates, and key priorities for 2025.
We will announce and introduce the proposed slate of new board candidates for the 2025-26 term. We will also kick off the voting process on the slate. Voting begins at the conclusion of the AGM and runs for 48 hours. Note that only DVS Plus members are eligible to vote.
