Information is Beautiful Awards Program Manager
In 2022, the Data Visualization Society (DVS) will host the return of the Information is Beautiful Awards. The IIB Awards ran from 2012-2019 and were paused during the last two years with the global pandemic. The IIB Awards are a global celebration of excellence in the field of data visualization, recognizing experienced practitioners and teams as well as emerging professionals. The DVS is excited to continue to continue the history of the IIB Awards and bring them back to the field this fall.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The IIB Awards Program Manager will lead the overall logistics and organization of the IIB Awards, reporting to Amanda, the Executive Director. This part time role will be a critical part of the team delivering on the overall Awards program and the celebration event where awards are announced.
While DVS programs are often supported by volunteers, we see investing in a paid role to support the IIB Awards as a strategic investment to ensure the operations and logistics of the events stay on track throughout the year, and are excited to have a new team member join us!
Specific duties are expected to include:
Awards logistics and operations
Define awards submission processes and platform launch, based on requirements summarized by the IIB Awards Special Committee and DVS Board
Track Awards-related spending against the approved budget, in close collaboration with the DVS Operations Director.
Recruit sponsors in collaboration with the DVS Partnerships Director, to include setting sponsorship packages, outreach to potential sponsors, and ensuring terms of sponsor agreements are completed.
Engage the IIB Awards Special Committee on topics related to awards structure, communications, and related activities.
Collaborate with IIB Awards Event Manager as requested to plan the fall awards ceremony event, to be hosted in an East Coast city in the United States
Awards communications and digital
Collaborate with the DVS Communications Team to create promotional assets for encouraging submissions to the 2022 IIB Awards
Identify distribution platforms and opportunities for sharing information about the 2022 IIB Awards submission opportunities and winners
Monitor IIB Awards website and identify necessary enhancements or changes, to be implemented by a developer on the team
Additional responsibilities
Ensuring the event represents DVS’ values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, including seeking speakers from underrepresented groups, ensuring ticketing/pricing is accessible, planning for accessibility accommodations for the event (e.g. live captioners, etc), and related activities.
Other duties as requested by the Executive Director or their designee for the purpose of planning and executing the 2022 IIB Awards.
The role is projected to be approximately 40 hours per month for June-September and 80 hours per month for October-November, working in collaboration with DVS Board Members, the IIB Awards Special Committee, and other part-time support for the Awards. The compensation for June-September will be $1,400 per month and increase to $2,800 per month for October-November to reflect the increased time and labor dedicated during that period. The total contract value is $11,200.
The contract will be executed as a fixed price contract with a deliverable and payment schedule defined by the Executive Director in consultation with the consultant.
About you
You are an enthusiastic, highly organized professional with experience managing complex events in collaboration with a team. You thrive in a world organized across spreadsheets, and are keen to identify where technology can improve both the behind the scenes organizers’ and attendees’ experiences at an event.
Ideally, data visualization is a passion of yours, either professionally or personally. You have an awareness of the breadth and diversity of the field, and are familiar with the IIB Awards or other data visualization/design awards programs. You have the bandwidth to work with a distributed team across continents (primarily Europe and North America), and the flexibility to join calls or meetings.
About Us
The Data Visualization Society is a registered 501(c)3 organization founded to serve as a professional home for those working across the discipline while leading others into this growing, dynamic field, and to increase the visibility and value of data visualization to the general public.
We seek to achieve this mission by investing in communication platforms and events to connect members, education platforms for teaching and learning, and leveraging those resources to foster skills growth, knowledge exchange, and meaningful critique. Our community will grow by engaging and encouraging underrepresented voices, and giving a place for ideas to be shared among data visualization developers, designers, artists, teachers, enthusiasts, and users.
